Here we list some typical travel times based on our experience and local knowledge of Kangaroo Island. When traveling on Kangaroo Island keep a look out for the local wildlife, as there is a chance a kangaroo or wallaby may decide to cross the road in front of you.
Travel after dark is not ideal, and should be undertaken with caution as Australian wildlife is active at night.
It is sealed bitumen roads all the way around Kangaroo Island with some dirt roads to a few of the attractions.
Adelaide CBD to Ferry at Cape Jervis – Allow 2 hours and you should aim to arrive 30 minutes before your Sealink ferry departure time. During part of your journey you will travel along some of the very picturesque Fleurieu Peninsula hills and coastal roads, and you will not be able to make up time easily if you do leave Adelaide too late.
Penneshaw to Kingscote – about 60km – 45 to 50 minutes
Kingscote being the largest township on Kangaroo Island is where you will find all the usual food supplies in the supermarket. The main street is very typical of Australian country towns.
There is no LPG at the western end of Kangaroo Island so if your vehicle is on LPG you should fill up at Kingscote before you travel further on your journey. It is a good idea to top up with normal fuel at Kingscote also.
Kingscote to Parndana – about 40km – approx 30 minutes
Parndana is the nearest town to Flinders Chase Farm, here you will find ULP fuel, a supermarket, magazines, post office, bakery, liquor,ice, etc. There is no LPG at Parndana for your vehicle.
Parndana is a typical Australian small township and is a must stop.
The Parndana Hotel is well known for its meals and welcome atmosphere.
Parndana to Flinders Chase Farm Accommodation – about 49km – About 35 minutes
Flinders Chase Farm to Flinders Chase Cafe and National Park – only about 10km – about 15 minutes by vehicle
The Chase Cafe is good for cafe style meals, take away bakery & hot food, & the entrance to Flinders Chase National Park.
There is no local shopping on the west end of Kangaroo Island, or near the farm so please bring all you need with you.
Dirt Roads on Kangaroo Island
The dirt roads are made with crushed local stone, which may not offer as much grip as you may expect, if you are not experienced with dirt road travel, keep you speed at 60km or even below.
